The official name given to hats like the one Duke Raoul/Hunter S. Thomspon (Johnny Depp) wore in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is a bucket hat. Although, I think to a lot of people, it is more colloquially called a ‘gilligan hat;’ made famous by Bob Denver in the 1960s TV show Gilligan’s Island (it was like Lost, but less flashbacks).
